Cotton Autopsy

Before you can know where your cotton comes from, you have to know what it is. A commitment to knowing is a precondition for advocacy.

We cannot defend what we do not know.

Cotton is the most ubiquitous fiber in our lives. It is so ingrained in the daily texture of human experience that its ubiquity has made it a stranger to us. Your shirt, sheets, bath towels, and jeans are made of cotton, and that's just the start.

Unless you are a textile nerd or professional, roving is a word that conjures movement. And it is. But as a noun, it refers to a specific step in the textile manufacturing process: the reduction of a sliver — a loose, untwisted rope of fiber. In this phase, the cotton has direction and shape, but remains fragile. Pull it too hard and it falls apart.

The drawn slivers are fed into a drafting system: three pairs of rollers running at increasing speeds, each pair pulling the fiber slightly faster than the one before it, thinning the strand with every pass. At the roving stage, a slight twist is introduced — enough to hold the fiber together for transit, but not tight enough to make yarn. That comes later, at the spinning frame, where the strand is drafted again and the full twist is finally applied. It is the twist that binds.

Gossypium hirsutum

The life of cotton begins with a seed. The word itself  descends from the Arabic qutn, a trace of the fiber's movement through the Islamic world before it reached European tongues. The plant is a shrub, native to tropical and subtropical regions across the Americas, Africa, and India. Its greatest wild diversity is concentrated in three centers — western Mexico, Australia, and northeast Africa to Arabia — each corresponding to a distinct evolutionary lineage of the genus. Long before it was a commodity, it was a geography.

Cotton is in the mallow family, descended from the parent Malvaceae — the same plant family that gives us okra and hibiscus. Malvaceae sits within the order Malvales, a grouping of roughly 6,000 flowering plant species across nine families, most of them shrubs and trees distributed across the tropics and subtropics. These relationships may appear linked by geography and diaspora culture, but they are in fact the result of taxonomy. And taxonomy has a history of its own.

In 1753, a 46-year-old Swedish naturalist named Carl Linnaeus published Species Plantarum — a two-volume catalog of every plant species known to European science at the time, roughly 7,300 in all. He organized them by their reproductive organs: pistils and stamens. Before Linnaeus, species names were unwieldy polynomials — sometimes up to twelve words long, more like descriptions than scientific names. His major innovation was to truncate these descriptions into two parts. His binomial compression provided the West with the biological lexicon it still uses today. We are still speaking Linnaeus's language. 

The research behind the 1,200 pages of Species Plantarum was gathered by his students — the ones he called his “apostles.” They were sent around the world on collecting expeditions that traversed the colonial networks of the Swedish, Dutch, and British empires. Species Plantarum did not discover plants. It extracted them. Millennia of accumulated Indigenous botanical knowledge was absorbed into a European classification system, stripped of its histories, and issued new Latin identities. When the book was published, it became the de facto origin of modern botanical nomenclature — meaning every plant name in formal use today traces its authority back to this single European document. Colonialism codified through linguistic supremacy.

For thousands of years before Linnaeus, Gossypium had been grown, harvested, spun, and woven by people across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Its domestication preceded European civilization itself. None of that tenure was legible in the naming system that now governed it. That did not stop the creator of Gossypium hirsutum from arguing that no civilized nation had ever been composed of nonwhite peoples.  

The same brain that named the genus Gossypium also played a role in determining who would harvest it. The system named the plant and the people in the same breath. His Systema Naturae, published in 1735, applied the same classificatory logic to plants and human beings, constructing a hierarchical taxonomy of races that built the “scientific” architecture for racial hierarchy directly into the Western intellectual tradition. In any conversation of taxonomy, this needs to be reckoned with.

 


 

Four Domesticated, One Dominant

In his 1926 monograph Production of Cotton, Gilbart Collings, a professor of agronomy at Clemson, catalogued roughly fifty species of Gossypium. Of those fifty, most were wild varieties. Only four were domesticated for commercial use.

Today, Gossypium hirsutum — American Upland — accounts for approximately 95% of the world's cotton production. Its staple length, yield, and adaptability made it the dominant variety of the American Cotton Belt. This is the cotton in your wardrobe. This is the cotton in COMOCO garments.

The luxury varieties — Sea Island, Egyptian, and Pima — are all Gossypium barbadense. They carry a longer staple and a silkier hand, and command a higher price, but yield less per acre. Gossypium arboreum, tree cotton, is perennial and ancient, nearly disappeared from commercial production. And Gossypium herbaceum, Levant cotton, is the old-world ancestor, still grown in parts of Africa and South Asia as a living remnant of the pre-colonial cotton world.

Sven Beckert’s Empire of Cotton traces how each region of production was reorganized around coercion of labor, land, and crop variety. Extraction was cultivated with the same intent as the cotton harvest itself. The plant can’t be separated from this history, but neither is it reducible to it. To know cotton is the preeminent reclamation event.


 


 

Provenance Scholarship

Commodities are acts of compression. Cultivation, land preparation, planting, watering, harvesting, ginning, spinning, knitting, cutting, and sewing all get reduced to a tag on a sleeve. Commodities strip humans from the energy and context of nature and object. When everything is interchangeable, what is lost is incalculable.

Cotton without provenance is wine with no terroir. Consider the distance between a glass of Welch's grape juice and a glass of Burgundy. Even though both are grapes, the difference is everything that surrounds it — the soil, maker, history, and place. When provenance is stripped away, so is value. When it is restored, the same is true. Commodities confuse price with value, and provenance scholars are called connoisseurs. If Made in France, Italy, or Japan don't hit the same for you as Made in China, it’s worth a serious inquiry into why that is when all are centers of historic and contemporary production. Provenance gives us opportunities to interrogate colonial indoctrination, and cotton does too.

Knowing where something comes from should not be a luxury. Provenance scholarship is an act of accountability, a vote against the status quo. We cannot defend what we do not know.
